That was my College Life...

"A belief obtained through telling, hearing and reading will not last long. Whereas, the faith gained from experience will last forever." - Amma

Namashivaya… This is Karthik 99ME20 (Hey This was my roll number). What ever I am going to write about Amrita is after living there for 4 years.

My Debut

I got into Amrita Institute of Technology and Science (Now Amrita Vishwa Vidya Peetham) on July 28th 1999. The choice of Amrita was actually taken for granted. I dint know a bit about the college when I joined. For my marks, that was the best available choice. I took up Mechanical Engineering.

I was like a picnic going to Amrita at ettimadai. Its about 18.5 km from my home located in the heart of Coimbatore. The bus passed beside the western ghats. I could see my college at a distance surrounded by the beautiful mountains. The 2.5 km from the highway really took me into the lush green country.

There the gates opened for me (The level Crossing). A fleet of buses went into the college. I was put up in the ‘C’ Batch. A gr8 lot of people. It was surprised to see one of my school mates in my class.

My Life at Amrita

My life at Amrita was a great blend of technical education, spirituality, and socialization. Every day began with the prayer "Om Sri Gurubyoh Namh". Thatz how teachers meant for us. I said "Lokah Samastah Sukino Bhavathu" right from my heart. That developed me into a poise personality.

During my first year I was a book-worm, a nerd. I wanted to secure the college first. Yes, I came as the first in Mechanical Engineering. I missed college first by 4 marks. It was secured buy my friend. She is the most intelligent and hard working person I have ever seen. I have learnt lots from people like her. But I never avoided people. I made lots of friends. Because of my frequent interaction with my class girls I earned a title kadala. Evern today some of my friends address me by that name.

As days passed by I was a more interested in ashram and other social working group which worked in my college. I gradually started devoting more time for those works. My ranks slipped a bit, but ‘ve never ranked below 10 in my class. By then I had lots of friends in various departments. During the star of the third year I became the secretary of a club Sahaya Hastha (Helping Hands) which worked within my college.

Besides all these work, my Prof. Mr Haran has always insisted in laboratory work. After hour working in the laboratory was regular for most of us. We used to measure the dimensions of the experimental setup and draw it to scale on our observation and record note books. I still remember that there are 18 buckets on the Pelton wheel in my Fluid Mechanics laboratory.
At the start of the final year on campus placements started. The first company was Soliton Automation. All the department students attended it. After 4 rounds of filtering, 4 people remained. I was proud to be one among them. Since it was a Software job, I wasn’t willing to join. Later I got placed in L&T (Larsen & Toubro). Joining L&T was a dream for me and I accomplished it. That joy again took me to the first place (93%) in the final year.

My Life – Post Amrita

Most of us were well settled. A few not settled either found themselves a job or went for higher studies. My learning at Amritha was a great aid to cross across the corporate world. Now I am working there in L&T (AUDCO INDIA LTD) as a R&D executive. I owe a lot to Amrita and my school Stanes for my current position.
